October 2026

  1. New

    Product

    Friday week in review

New blog posts land every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Friday's post rounds up the week's biggest UK property stories and ends on a genuinely good piece of news.

Why A short, regular round-up is easier to keep up with than scattered updates, and it is good to head into the weekend with something positive.

  2. New

    Product

    Quick answers on blog posts

Blog posts now open with a straight answer and finish with a short set of common questions, each answered in a few plain sentences.

Why Most people arrive with one question in mind. Answering it up front saves them reading the whole post to find it.

  3. New

    Product

Latest posts on the home page, plus an RSS feed

The home page now shows the three newest blog posts. You can also follow the blog in any feed reader at /blog/feed.xml.

Why New posts are easy to miss if you have to go looking for them. Now they come to you.

September 2026

  1. New

    Product

UK housing news on the blog, with sources

The blog now leads with UK housing news and commentary, from Bank of England rate decisions and house price figures to stamp duty, rents and renting reform. Every news post lists the official sources behind its figures.

Why People planning a move want to know what changed this month and what it means for them, and they should be able to check the numbers for themselves.

  2. New

    Product

A wider range of blog topics

Blog posts now cover far more ground, from mortgages, renting and selling to broadband, schools, air quality and local housing markets, and the same subject no longer comes round again and again.

Why A blog that kept returning to the same few stories was not worth coming back to. Variety makes each new post worth reading.

  3. New

    Product

Blog shares show the story picture

When you share a blog post on X or LinkedIn, the preview now shows that story’s picture and title, not a blank card.

Why A shared link should look like the piece you meant to send, so friends and colleagues open the right story first time.

  4. New

  5. New

    Product

    Industry blog

A new Blog with UK property and area data stories from the Bythenumbers Team. Share any post to X, LinkedIn or Reddit in one click.

Why People weighing a move need clear, recent reading grounded in published data, not another listings feed.

  6. New

    Reports

Crime on unit postcodes via the parent district

Full postcode reports such as NG9 7JJ now show recorded crime by falling back to the parent district when the exact neighbourhood row is not published yet.

Why National crime had landed for each district’s sample neighbourhood, but not for every LSOA, so most unit pages still looked empty even after a successful refresh.

  7. New

    Reports

Crime on every English and Welsh postcode report

Unit postcode reports now pick up neighbourhood crime from the full street archive, with a district fallback. Empty planning and roadworks tiles are hidden until those datasets are live.

Why National crime was only stored against each district’s single sample neighbourhood, so most unit pages looked empty. Placeholder cards that only said ‘not in this dataset yet’ added noise without helping a decision.

  8. New

    Data

Crime context from the latest three months

Recorded crime on reports now uses the latest three months of police.uk data, so national refreshes stay practical and the figures stay current.

Why A full year-on-year crime compare meant downloading dozens of gigabytes of archives and could hang the monthly refresh for hours. Three recent months keep the mix and rate without blocking the rest of the dataset.

  9. New

    Data

Watch the national data refresh live

Staff can follow each layer as it lands, with updated counts and source dates on the ingest screen. National crime now pulls the full police.uk archives, and the published stamp updates before scores finish.

Why A UK-wide refresh takes hours. Without live progress and an early publish stamp, it looked like nothing had happened even when districts and metrics were already in the database.

  10. New

    Data

National data refresh that can pick up where it left off

The monthly full-UK ingest now checkpoints each finished layer. If a run is interrupted, the next attempt skips completed work and only publishes when the full queue is done.

Why A UK-wide refresh can outlast a single job window. Losing finished layers and republishing half a snapshot would waste hours and risk an inconsistent live dataset.

  11. New

    Product

Homepage shows the place and the money

The hero now opens with bythenumbers, then a dual doorway: check any UK postcode, or jump into the calculators. How it works and the tools strip match the live product.

Why Area reports and calculators were both live, but the front door still only sold the postcode search. The first screen should match what people can actually do.

  12. New

    Product

    Fifteen more property calculators

Deposit, LTV, deposit growth, moving and conveyancing costs, overpayments, mortgage comparison, fixed versus tracker, term, equity, running costs, rent affordability, rental budget, buy-to-let cash flow and net sale proceeds.

Why The first seven tools covered the big buying questions. This wave fills renting, owning, investing and selling so every stage of a move has a matching calculator on the hub.

  13. New

    Product

Property calculators alongside the area picture

Mortgage repayment and affordability, stamp duty, buying power, true cost of buying, rental yield and buy versus rent, with a hub under Calculators in the nav.

Why An area score alone does not answer can I afford it or what does the move cost. These tools sit next to reports so the money maths and the place maths live in one product.

  14. New

    Product

    Release notes and public ideas

A public changelog of what we have shipped, plus a form to propose the next idea. Staff can review every submission in the admin console.

Why People should see what changed without digging through commits, and we want a clear inbox for product ideas with a way to reply when something ships.

  15. New

    Compare

    Clearer compare layout

Compare now leads with category context and a tighter postcode picker, so the gap between places is easier to read before you run the numbers.

Why The old page buried the form under a long hero. People comparing a shortlist need the inputs and the category story in one glance.

July 2026

  1. New

    Data

Government data layers on every report

Area reports pull schools, transport, flood, broadband, market, health and more from published UK government and open sources, with category guides that explain each layer.

Why A single score without the underlying numbers is a black box. Showing the same open data we use builds trust and lets you challenge a figure.

May 2026

  1. New

    Compare

    Compare up to three postcodes

Side-by-side Area Measure and layer scores for two or three places, so a shortlist is numbers-first instead of guesswork.

Why Most house moves are a choice between a few streets. A three-way compare is the decision tool people actually need before a viewing.

March 2026

  1. New

    Reports

Area Measure reports for every UK postcode

Type a postcode and get a transparent 0–100 Area Measure built from open data, with the working shown on the page.

Why Property decisions start with place. We built one honest headline number first, not a directory of calculators with no shared language.

Upcoming

  • Alert digests that actually send — Monthly and quarterly digests for watched postcodes, once the queue is wired end to end.
  • Deeper flood and risk context — Richer flood warning and long-term risk framing on reports, without turning the page into a weather app.

Near-term aims, not a promise calendar.
